Backyard Chickens for the North Island
The Ameraucana is one of the most popular breeds among backyard chicken keepers across the U.S. and Canada, and a must-have for all types of flock owners.
The breed was originally developed in the 1970s, derived from Araucanas. Ameraucanas were bred to retain the blue-egg laying gene but eliminate some of the issues associated with the Araucana breed.
Known for their beautiful blue eggs, the Ameraucana is a hardy, family-friendly, and easy-going bird that fits well in any flock. Ameraucanas can be identified by their pea combs, muffs and/or beards, and their greenish legs.
Ameraucanas are extremely hardy birds that adapt well to both urban and rural settings
